Changeover Switches and Manual Transfer Switches: Choosing Safe Source Switching

What a changeover switch (manual transfer switch) does, why break-before-make matters, single vs three phase, generator interlocking, and the specification fields that keep a backup supply safe.

A changeover switch — called a manual transfer switch in North America — is the device that decides which source feeds an installation: the utility, or a standby generator. It sounds trivial. It is the single component that, if specified wrong, can back-feed a generator into a dead grid and endanger line crews, or connect two sources in parallel and destroy both. This guide covers how they work, the variants that matter, and how to specify one correctly.

The one rule: break-before-make

A proper changeover switch never connects both sources at once. Its mechanism passes through an OFF position between the two ON positions — "break-before-make". This guarantees a dead interval during switching, which is what prevents parallel connection of utility and generator. Any device marketed as a changeover switch without a genuine centre-off or mechanically interlocked position is not fit for source switching. Verify the interlock physically before accepting a product.

Generator applications: the interlock question

For standby generators the switch must do three jobs: select the source, isolate the unused source completely, and make back-feed impossible by construction. In many markets the installation also requires that the generator neutral be handled per local code — some systems bond neutral at the generator, others at the service entrance; a 4-pole changeover that switches neutral is often the correct choice to avoid parallel neutral paths. State the pole count deliberately: 2-pole for single-phase without neutral switching, 4-pole where the neutral must transfer.

Manual vs automatic: an honest boundary

A manual changeover requires a person to throw it — acceptable where someone is present when the grid fails, and the cheapest safe option. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) senses the failure and switches alone; it costs more and needs commissioning. The middle ground people ask about — "semi-automatic" — usually means a manual switch plus a generator with auto-start; that combination is safe only if the generator cannot energise the installation until the switch is thrown, so the interlock discipline still rests on the switch itself.
