TS35 is so dominant that people say "DIN rail" and mean it — but 15 mm and G-profile rails are still out there, particularly in retrofit work. Confirm the rail before ordering a batch of blocks that will not clip on.

The vibration row is the one that decides most industrial jobs. A screw terminal on a machine that vibrates continuously will need periodic re-torquing, and in practice that maintenance often does not happen. Spring-clamp designs maintain contact force as the joint relaxes and are the safer default in that environment.
Sizing to the Conductor
Terminal blocks are rated for a conductor cross-section range, not a single size. Both ends of that range matter:
- Too large a conductor will not seat properly — the clamp cannot close on it correctly.
- Too small a conductor in an oversized clamp gives inadequate contact pressure and a high-resistance joint.
- Fine-stranded conductors should be ferruled for screw and push-in terminals. Bare strands splay, and splayed strands escape the clamp.
Current Rating and the Derating Everyone Forgets
The printed current rating assumes defined conditions — typically a single block at a reference ambient temperature with free air around it. Real panels violate all of that.
Three derating factors apply in combination:
- Ambient temperature. A panel in direct sun or beside a heat source runs far above the reference figure.
- Block density. Fifty blocks packed on a rail heat each other. This is the factor most often ignored.
- Enclosure ventilation. A sealed IP66 box behaves very differently from a louvred cabinet.
A conservative design leaves genuine margin on current rating rather than specifying to the nameplate figure and hoping.

- End brackets — without them the assembly slides along the rail.
- End plates — close off the last block and maintain insulation.
- Jumper bars — distribute a common potential cleanly instead of daisy-chaining loops of wire.
- Marking strips — the difference between a five-minute fault trace and an hour of continuity testing.
- Neutral and ground bars — dedicated bars for star points and earthing.

Mechanically they will usually clip on together, but jumper bars and end plates are generally not interchangeable between manufacturers. Keep one family per rail section.
How tight should a screw terminal be?
To the manufacturer's stated torque — use a torque screwdriver. Over-tightening damages fine strands and can crack the housing; under-tightening leaves a resistive joint.
Do I need ferrules?
For fine-stranded conductors in screw or push-in terminals, yes. Spring-clamp terminals tolerate bare fine strands better, but ferrules remain good practice.
