Electricity Consumption Monitors: How to Track, Log and Cut Your Energy Use
Reducing an electricity bill starts with knowing where the energy is going. An electricity consumption monitor gives you that visibility — from a single circuit feeding a machine to a whole building's three-phase supply. This guide covers how they work, how to choose between WiFi and wired monitoring, and what to do with the data once you have it.
What consumption monitors actually track
At minimum, a consumption monitor measures accumulated energy (kWh) — the same unit your electricity bill is based on. Better models add:
- Live power (W or kW): shows instantaneous demand, useful for spotting idle equipment that should be switched off.
- Voltage and current: for quick electrical health checks.
- Reactive energy (kvarh): for power factor monitoring in commercial installations.
- Time-of-use logging: records consumption in half-hourly or hourly intervals for demand analysis.
WiFi vs RS485: choosing the right connectivity
WiFi monitors (YEM021 3-phase WiFi smart meter) are ideal for small businesses, retail units, rental properties and homes. Installation requires only a DIN-rail mounting space and a WiFi network — no separate data gateway. The companion app provides real-time readings and 12-month history. Limitation: WiFi signal must reach the distribution board; accuracy can fluctuate if the WiFi connection drops.
RS485 Modbus monitors (80A DIN-rail RS485 consumption meter) are the standard for larger commercial and industrial installations where multiple meters feed a central SCADA/BMS over a single two-wire bus. Up to 247 meters can share one RS485 bus. Data rates up to 9600 baud; data is logged to the BMS, not to a cloud server.
Installing a DIN-rail consumption monitor
DIN-rail consumption monitors fit standard 35 mm DIN rails inside existing consumer units and distribution boards. Installation steps:
- Isolate the circuit at the upstream breaker.
- Snap the monitor onto the DIN rail next to the MCB.
- Wire the incoming supply to the monitor input terminals (L1/L2/L3/N for three-phase, L/N for single-phase).
- Connect the monitor output to the load terminals.
- For WiFi models, power on and follow the app pairing procedure.
- For RS485 models, set the Modbus device address using the front-panel DIP switches and connect to the RS485 bus.
Acting on consumption data
The data only saves money if acted on. Typical actions: schedule high-load equipment (compressors, chillers, EV chargers) outside peak tariff hours; identify circuits with high overnight base load (refrigeration equipment left on standby at incorrect setpoints); spot motors with unexpectedly high current draw indicating mechanical wear; verify that energy-saving measures (LED replacements, VFDs) are actually delivering the expected saving.
FAQ
What is an electricity consumption monitor?
A device that measures and records electrical energy (kWh), live power (W) and often voltage and current — giving visibility into how and when energy is being used.
How does a WiFi energy monitor work?
It connects to your WiFi network and sends consumption data to a cloud app on your smartphone. No separate data logger needed — it's DIN-rail mounted inside the distribution board.
Can I install a consumption monitor without rewiring?
Yes. DIN-rail monitors snap onto the existing rail in your distribution board and are wired in series with the circuit — same as installing any DIN-rail device.
Ready to monitor energy consumption at circuit or building level?
We manufacture WiFi DIN-rail smart meters (YEM021 3-phase, single-phase variants), RS485 Modbus consumption meters and multi-circuit panel monitors. Tell us the phase count, current rating and connectivity requirement — we confirm the correct model within one working day.
