Electricity Meter Box: Types, What to Look For & How to Buy

Electricity meter box buying guide: LV enclosures vs HV combined metering boxes, key specs (CT/PT ratio, accuracy), and what utilities and EPCs should check before ordering.

Direct answer: an electricity meter box is the protective housing that contains the metering equipment — from simple residential enclosures for a single kWh meter to high-voltage combined metering boxes that integrate CTs, PTs and the meter for grid-level revenue metering. For commercial buyers the two questions that matter are: what voltage class, and what's integrated.

Utility engineers and EPC teams ask us about "meter boxes" every week. The confusion is that the term covers two very different products: a plastic or metal enclosure for a meter, and a combined metering box that is itself the metering system — transformers, protection and meter in one unit.

What to Check on an HV Metering Box (JLS Series)

Why EPCs and Utilities Buy Combined Boxes

A combined metering box like our JLS-10 five-column oil metering box (10 kV, three-phase three-wire) or the JLSZY-10 four-wire version turns a bare feeder into a complete metering point in one factory-tested unit. For distribution utilities upgrading rural or industrial feeders, that collapses weeks of site-built CT/PT installation into a single bolted-on product.

Buying Tips

  1. Send the utility's metering spec — ratio, class, wiring — not just "a meter box".
  2. Ask for the CT/PT accuracy certificate with the shipment.
  3. Confirm 50 Hz or 60 Hz and the connection diagram up front.
  4. Check the IP rating against the installation site (coastal, desert, indoor).

FAQ

Is an electricity meter box the same as a meter board?

No. A board is usually a mounting surface; a box is an enclosed housing. In utility terms, "meter box" often means the full metering enclosure including CTs and PTs.

Can I use an LV enclosure for an HV meter?

No — HV metering needs a combined metering box rated for the system voltage with proper creepage, insulation and grounding. Mixing them up is a safety and accuracy risk.
