Knife Switches and Isolating Switches: Ratings, Poles and Where They Belong
A knife switch is the oldest idea in electrical safety made modern: a visible blade that moves through air, so anyone standing at the panel can see whether the circuit is connected or isolated. Modern isolating switches keep that principle — visible contact gap, positive blade engagement — inside a flame-retardant body with ratings that suit industrial duty. This guide separates the three devices buyers confuse, then covers the specification choices that matter.
Three devices, three jobs
- Knife / isolating switch: connects or isolates a circuit. It carries current and gives visible isolation. It does NOT interrupt fault current and, unfused, does not protect anything.
- Fuse switch disconnector: the same visible isolation plus fuse protection in one body — the fuse clears the fault. See our dedicated guide on that family.
- Circuit breaker: interrupts overload and short-circuit automatically, but its contact gap is internal — you cannot see isolation, which is why standards and site rules often demand a visible isolator upstream for maintenance work.
The practical rule: isolation is a safety function, protection is a clearing function. A knife switch delivers the first; pair it with fuses or a breaker for the second.
Where isolating switches earn their place
- Motor and feeder isolation: a lockable isolator at the machine lets maintenance prove dead at the point of work.
- PV negative-pole duty: solar arrays need the negative conductor isolated as deliberately as the positive; dedicated negative-pole isolating switches exist for exactly this.
- Board and busbar section isolation: splitting a distribution board into sections that can be worked independently.
- Changeover and source selection: knife mechanisms are the heart of many manual changeover arrangements.
Specification choices that matter
- Current rating: match or exceed the circuit's protective device rating. Our BP32 series spans 100A, 250A, 400A and 630A frames — pick the frame, then the rating within it.
- Poles: 3P for three-phase without neutral switching, 4P where the neutral must isolate too; single-pole versions serve negative-pole and DC duties.
- Throw: single-throw for simple isolation; double-throw where one switch selects between two sources or two loads.
- Body and contacts: flame-retardant housing and copper contacts keep temperature rise and contact resistance low over years of operation.
- Operation: direct handle or external/rotary handle through a door — the latter keeps live parts behind a closed panel while operating.
Installation discipline
- Mount so gravity cannot close the blades — a knife switch must never fall ON.
- Provide locking provision for maintenance isolation and label the positions.
- Check blade engagement and terminal torque on a schedule; a half-engaged blade is a heating element.
- Never use an unfused isolating switch as the only fault protection on a circuit.
