Portable Socket Boxes: Site Power Done Safely (IP67, Breaker-Integrated)
A portable socket box is a sealed enclosure that turns one incoming supply into several protected outlets you can carry to where the work is. On construction sites, events, shipyards and in workshops it replaces the improvised tangle of adapters and taped joints that causes most temporary-power incidents. This guide explains what belongs inside a good box and how to configure one for your application.
Anatomy of a proper socket box
- Enclosure: impact-resistant PC or similar, sealed to IP67 so dust and water jets stay outside. The lid gasket and captive screws are what keep that rating real.
- Incoming protection: a leakage (residual current) device and miniature circuit breakers behind a transparent hinged window — visible and resettable without opening the sealed body.
- Outlets: industrial pin-and-sleeve sockets (typically 3P 16A or 3P 32A) with spring-loaded flip caps, so an unused outlet stays sealed.
- Incoming lead: a fitted cable with a matching industrial plug, sized for the box's total rating.
- Handling: an integral carry handle and mounting points for hanging on scaffolding or wall.
Why integrated protection is not optional
Temporary power fails people in two ways: overload on an undersized extension, and earth leakage through damp ground or damaged tools. A socket box that carries its own RCD and MCBs puts both protections at the point of use, upstream of every tool plugged in. It also makes the protection visible — a tripped breaker in the window tells the crew which circuit failed, instead of a dead socket with no explanation.
Configuring one: the five decisions
- Socket count and rating: match the tools actually used. Four 16A outlets cover most site gangs; a welder or compressor may need a 32A outlet instead.
- Protection devices: RCD sensitivity (30mA for personnel protection) and MCB curves per outlet group.
- Incoming cable and plug: cross-section and length for the voltage drop at your expected load; the plug must match the site's supply sockets.
- Enclosure rating: IP67 for outdoor and wash-down duty; verify the caps and window are part of that rating, not accessories.
- Mounting: handle-only carry, or wall/scaffold brackets for semi-permanent positions.
Where they earn their keep
Construction and fit-out sites where the distribution board is floors away; outdoor events and markets; maintenance crews working across a plant; marinas and yards with damp conditions; and any location where the alternative is a chain of domestic adapters. In each case the box converts an uncontrolled extension into a defined, protected, inspectable circuit — the same discipline that governs permanent installations, applied to temporary ones.
Inspection and care
- Test the RCD with its test button at each shift start.
- Check cap gaskets and the window seal for cuts or permanent set.
- Inspect the incoming lead at the gland — flexing damage starts there.
- Keep the breaker schedule label legible; a box nobody can read is a box nobody trusts.
