Three-Phase Energy Meters: 3-Wire vs 4-Wire, Direct vs CT, and How to Specify

Three phase energy meter guide: three-wire vs four-wire, direct-connected vs CT-operated, accuracy class, DIN rail mounting and the YEM024SJ-N specification.

Direct answer: "three-phase energy meter" is a category, not a specification. Before ordering you need four decisions: three-wire or four-wire, direct-connected or CT-operated, accuracy class, and communication. Get any of them wrong and the problem usually surfaces at commissioning, not at ordering.

We supply three-phase meters to distributors and contractors across India, the UK, the Philippines and Pakistan, and the same specification mistakes recur. Here is what each decision actually means.

Decision 1: Three-Wire or Four-Wire

3-phase 3-wire3-phase 4-wire
NeutralNo neutralNeutral present
Measuring elementsTwoThree
Typical loadsMotors, delta-connected industrialMixed commercial, any single-phase loads
Common supply3×400 V delta3×230/400 V star

The practical rule: if any single-phase load is fed from this supply, you need four-wire. A three-wire meter on a four-wire system with unbalanced single-phase loading will not measure correctly, because the neutral current has nowhere to be accounted for.

Decision 2: Direct-Connected or CT-Operated

Direct-connected means the load current flows through the meter itself. Simple, fewer components, no CT error contribution — but limited by the meter's current rating. A 3×5(80) A meter handles up to 80 A continuous.

CT-operated means current transformers step the current down and the meter measures the secondary. Necessary above roughly 100 A, and required wherever the conductors are too large to route through a meter.

The notation matters: 3×5(80)A means a basic current of 5 A with a maximum of 80 A. The first number is where the meter is calibrated; the second is the ceiling. Buyers frequently read only the larger number.

Decision 3: Accuracy Class

Decision 4: Communication

Do not pay for communication you will not commission. An unused RS485 port costs little; an unused cellular module costs real money per unit and may carry ongoing connectivity fees.

A Concrete Reference: YEM024SJ-N

To make the above tangible, here is one of our standard three-phase DIN-rail meters:

Sizing: Use Demand, Not Breaker Rating

A recurring error is sizing the meter to the incoming breaker. The breaker is a protection device sized for fault handling and future headroom; it is not a statement of actual load. Size the meter to measured or calculated peak demand with sensible margin. Over-sizing pushes normal operation into the bottom of the measuring range, which is exactly where accuracy is weakest.

Installation Checklist

  1. Confirm phase rotation before energising.
  2. Verify CT polarity — reversed polarity produces negative or wildly wrong readings on that phase.
  3. Check DIN rail is the 35 mm standard type.
  4. Confirm each phase indicator illuminates after energising.
  5. Cross-check the first reading against a clamp meter on a known load.

FAQ

Can I use a three-phase meter on a single-phase supply?

Technically it will run on one element, but it is the wrong tool and wastes cost. Use a single-phase meter.

What does 3×5(80)A mean?

Basic current 5 A, maximum current 80 A, on each of three phases. The meter is calibrated around the basic current and rated to handle up to the maximum continuously.

Is Class 1.0 accepted for billing?

Yes in most markets under IEC 62053-21. Some utilities require Class 0.5S for larger connections — check the local requirement before ordering.

Do you offer OEM branding?

Yes — custom logo, firmware configuration, communication protocol and packaging. MOQ is typically higher for OEM than for standard models; we confirm exact figures with the quotation.
