What Is a Current Transformer Meter

A current transformer meter is an energy metering setup that uses a current transformer (CT) to measure electricity in high-current circuits. Instead of passing the full supply current through the meter, the CT steps it down to a safe, standard value — typically 5 A or 1 A — that the meter can read accurately. This makes CT metering the standard approach for industrial, commercial, and utility installations.

How a current transformer meter works

The CT is clamped around or wired into the main conductor. It produces a secondary current proportional to the primary current, and the meter multiplies this by the CT ratio to display the real energy consumption in kWh. For example, a 400/5 A CT with a meter reading 2.5 A secondary means the primary current is 200 A.

CT ratio: the key number

The ratio (e.g., 100/5, 400/5, 1000/5) must match the expected load. Choose a primary rating at about 60-80% of the maximum load for best metering accuracy — too high loses low-load accuracy, too low risks saturation.
