How to Choose a Three-Phase Energy Meter: Selection Guide

Choosing a three-phase energy meter comes down to six decisions: phase configuration (3P4W vs 3P3W), connection mode (direct vs CT), accuracy class, tariff support, communication, and certification. Get those six right and the meter will serve your project for a decade; get them wrong and you will pay twice.

What is the difference between a 3-phase energy meter and a 3-phase power meter?

An energy meter registers energy (kWh) over time and is used for billing and monitoring. A power meter typically measures instantaneous electrical parameters (V, A, kW, power factor) and often includes energy registers as well. Many modern multifunction meters do both.

Can I use a 3P4W meter on a 3P3W system?

Usually yes — most meters have a configurable connection mode. Set the mode correctly before energizing, and match the voltage range to the system.

Do I need MID certification for a three-phase meter?
